Mongero Monday #20 with guest, Shane Monahan, a former Professional Baseball Player for Seattle. Shane was an outfielder in the Seattle Mariners organization and had the opportunity to play in the big leagues for parts of two seasons including with Ken Griffey Jr. Trent and Shane discussed this experience along with the importance of the mental game and the landscape of travel baseball. The “good, the bad and the ugly”!!!

- “You have to hunt to kill”….you have to fight for a position.
- When you don’t have the greatest talent, you put your head down and work!
- When hard work stems from the top it trickles all the way down to the freshman.
- “If a freshman wants my spot you’re going to have to come get me….you’re going to have to out work me.”
- Practice, organization, efficiency, holding people to a high standard.
- Best programs police each other…they don’t have to be policed by the coaches.
- Players have to earn the right to police….starts with hard work.
- Play the game with intensity.
- Laser focus.
- When you work hard all your doing is increasing your odds of things going your way…you don’t deserve anything.
- Pick the brain of your coaches.
- Journal.
- Attention to detail.

- Number one thing he learned from Ken Griffey= Have fun and never come to the ball field in a bad mood.
- Hone in on your craft.
- Humility, reputation.
- “All that matters is when you show up to the field you play for your teammates”.
- Players need to create their own style of play.
- Coaches: Educate your parents as much as you do the players.
- Players having the right mindset creates a player who can grow.
- Is this a hobby or is this a habit?
- “This is not your journey, you’re here to support him”.
- “Winning is a by-product of all of the development”.
- Communication.
- Repetition work.
- Commitment, accountability.
- Throw the ball off the wall. Find a way to get better.
- “How hard do i want it and how mentally strong can I be to get through the rough times”.
- Are you willing to sacrifice being cool to be elite?
- Take what you have learned from your lessons to the cages on your own.
- Always stay coachable.
- If you love the game of baseball then the work is not the grind.
- You have to have realistic goals and realistic expectations.
- “This is a long call, this is a journey, this is a battle”.
- Have fun and play hard.
